At the beginning of the 7th century, following the recommendation of the continental culture by Prince Shotoku, the papermaking technology was introduced from China.
Plantation of Kozo(paper mulberry) was also encouraged by him everywhere in Japan and the papermaking industry was thus developed at national level. Such story was clearly described in the “Archive of Shoso-in Treasure House, Nara”.
200 years later, the “Flow Papermaking” technology had become popular and the contemporary technology of the so-called “Washi” had been established. The “Washi” means the paper made in Japan compare to the western paper made of wooden fiber.
While, other Asian paper is made of hemp manufactured by the “Still Papermaking” technology. In comparison with the aforesaid Western and other Asian papers, the “Washi” is the unique Japanes “Paper”.
Cultivating the Japanese “Washi” of the best quality, Tomita has developed the sophisticated wallcoverings matching to the contemporary space and exported them to 17 countries to date. This time, we have created the KOZO vol W, adding new designs after a quarter century since the original premiere. |
